Design of a mobile application

Role: UX Designer

Client: National Wellness Institute

Team: 2 UX Designers

Context: Ironhack Bootcamp

Overview

The objective of this project was to create a “stress reduction and relaxation” application for the National Wellness Institute . This application has to help users to:

  • Adopt and maintain a relaxation routine

  • Evaluate their progress and share it with their personal coach

Understanding the user

In order to design the best possible solution, it is necessary to have a deep understanding of users.

Meeting the user

To understand people who suffer from stress we conducted a series of surveys and interviews. We discussed with them about these questions:

• How does stress affect them, and what are the main consequences?

• Do they know any techniques or tools to combat stress?

Which techniques do users like or would like to use to relax?

• Do users follow any routines to relax? If not, would they like to?

• What are users’ main blocks to combat stress?

We realized that:

The main consequences of stress are anxiety and difficulty getting to sleep.

People who know and use certain techniques prefer meditation and sport, but would like to have other options.

People suffering from stress would like to get suggestions and routines to combat it. Users need to be guided.

People need to use techniques adapted to their free time, which is very limited

Our user:

Persona

Where is our user blocked?

How can we help our user to combat stress? To answer this question, we look at how our user deals with his stress problem in his day-to-day life and when and why he feels stuck. This will help us determine how we can help them.

User journey

How can we help our user?

Our research conclusion is:

People suffering from stress need suggestions about what to do because they lack the time and knowledge to do ti correctly.

We believe that by offering them anti-stress routines adapted to their needs and preferences, as well as support from a professional coach, we wils reduce their stress and help them feel better.

Designing the solution

Based on the research conducted, to help our user, our application should:

Our application

Once we have defined how we can help our user, we start to build our application, organizing the different activities that the user can perform:

Our users’ path

Below, we can see what the user has to do in our application to obtain a personalized plan, carry it out, see its evolution and share it with his coach.

Userflow

Give users the opportunity to enter key information about their state of health and stress level.

Generate a personalized anti-stress plan based on the information provides and their preferences.

Allow users to choose different activities according to the time they have available.

Give them the opportunity to check their progress and share it with their coach for feedback and advice.

The final product

We look for atmospheres that recall calm and peace, helping our users to relax. We have chosen colors and images related to nature and soothing landscapes.

Hi-fi Prototypes

We have developed the screens corresponding to the above defined user flow:

Creating an account

Generating a customized plan based on their mood and preferences

Performing an activity according to duration, preferences and time of day

Evaluating the progress and sharing it with their coach
